Zdeno Chara is leaving the Boston Bruins after 14 seasons and signing a one-year free-agent contract with the Washington Capitals.

Chara, 43, will make $795,000 against the salary cap with Washington. He said the Bruins decided to go in a different direction, and the unrestricted free agent was not in their plans.

Lindsey Vonn and P.K. Subban have decided to separate.

The sporting world's power couple took to social media Tuesday to announce the news, which came almost a year to the day after Vonn said she had asked Subban to marry her.

Chicago Blackhawks forward Kirby Dach will miss four to five months after having surgery Monday on his fractured right wrist, the team said.

Dach, playing for Team Canada, was hurt during an exhibition win last week against Russia ahead of the world junior championships.

Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews is out indefinitely as he deals with an undisclosed illness.

"This offseason, I've been experiencing symptoms that have left me feeling drained and lethargic," Toews said in a statement from the team. "I am working with doctors so I can better understand my condition.

"Until I can get my health back to a place where I feel I can perform at an elite level and help my team, I will not be joining the Blackhawks for training camp. I do not have a timetable for when I will rejoin the team. I am extremely disappointed, but it wouldn't be fair to myself or my teammates to attempt to play in my current condition."

Washington Capitals goaltender Henrik Lundqvist will undergo open-heart surgery to address the issue that will prevent him from playing this season.

Lundqvist announced Monday on Twitter that he will undergo an "aortic valve replacement, aortic root and ascending aortic replacement."

NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said he expects the NHL's teams in Canada to be able to play home games this season.

"On the basis of our discussions [with provincial health authorities] in the past week, as well as our exchange of correspondence over the last 24 hours, we believe we are aligned and in agreement on the conditions on which each of our Canadian franchises can begin play in their own buildings for the start of the 2020-21 NHL season," Daly said in a statement Thursday.

The Chicago Blackhawks announced that they were committing to a youth movement, but one of those players won't be available for a while.

The team announced that 22-year-old forward Alex Nylander underwent knee surgery Monday and will be sidelined four-to-six months.

The NHL has postponed the outdoor Stadium Series game in North Carolina that was expected to be played in February.

The announcement was made Wednesday as the league firms up its full schedule for a season that will be shortened to 56 regular-season games for each team because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Tampa Bay Lightning star winger Nikita Kucherov is undergoing hip surgery next week and will miss the entire regular season, general manager Julien BriseBrois announced Wednesday.

There will be advertisements on NHL players' helmets this season as teams try to recoup revenue lost to the pandemic.

The New Jersey Devils, Washington Capitals and Nashville Predators became the first teams to unveil helmet ads Tuesday.
